What Is a Fraction?

A fraction is a way to represent a part of a whole. It’s made of two numbers:


Numerator (top number): How many parts you have.


Denominator (bottom number): How many total parts the whole is divided into.


Example:

1/2 means one out of two equal parts.

Proper Fraction: Smaller on top (e.g., 3/4)


Improper Fraction: Bigger on top (e.g., 5/2)


Mixed Number: Whole number + fraction (e.g., 2 1/2)
